How to Play Jacks or Better

Jacks or Better is a five-card draw video poker game. You are dealt five cards and choose which to keep and which to discard. The goal is to make the best possible poker hand. Here is how the game works:

1

Place Your Bet

Choose your coin value and bet between 1 and 5 coins per hand. Always bet the maximum 5 coins to qualify for the 800:1 Royal Flush payout. Betting fewer coins reduces the Royal Flush payout to 250:1.

2

Receive Your Cards

You are dealt five cards face up from a standard 52-card deck. Evaluate your hand and decide which cards to keep (hold) and which to discard. You can hold any number of cards from zero to five.

3

Draw New Cards

Click Draw to replace the discarded cards with new ones from the deck. The new cards complete your final hand. You cannot draw again after the second deal.

4

Collect Your Winnings

Your final hand is evaluated against the paytable. The minimum winning hand is a pair of Jacks or better. Higher hands pay more, with the Royal Flush paying 800:1 at maximum coins.

Bonus Features and Game Mechanics

Optimal Strategy

Jacks or Better has a mathematically optimal strategy that maximises your expected return to 99.54%. Strategy charts are freely available and tell you exactly which cards to hold for every possible hand. Using a strategy chart is legal and encouraged.

Royal Flush Bonus

The Royal Flush (A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit) pays 800:1 when you bet the maximum 5 coins. Betting fewer coins reduces this to 250:1. Always bet maximum coins to qualify for the full Royal Flush payout.

Five-Card Draw

Jacks or Better uses the five-card draw format. You receive five cards, choose which to keep, and draw replacements for the discarded cards. Your final five-card hand determines your payout.

Skill Element

Unlike slots and roulette, Jacks or Better has a genuine skill element. The cards you choose to hold directly affect your expected return. Players who learn optimal strategy achieve a significantly higher RTP than those who play randomly.

Clear Paytable

The paytable is always visible on screen, showing the payout for every winning hand. Jacks or Better uses a 9/6 paytable (Full House pays 9:1, Flush pays 6:1), which is the most favourable standard paytable.

Auto Hold

The Auto Hold feature automatically highlights the statistically optimal cards to hold based on your current hand. This is useful for beginners learning the game, though experienced players may prefer to make their own decisions.
